The woman studied Raizel. \u201cYou have skills I don\u2019t?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I can\u2019t design a building,\u201d Raizel admitted, \u201cor build one. \u00a0But in the last two days I\u2019ve been dusted by a pixie, blessed by a spectre, and kissed by what might have been a goddess.\u201d \u00a0Also by two whores, but she didn\u2019t think that counted. \u00a0\u201cAlso, I grew up on a mountain side, and I have on occasion bound wild goats, a catamount, and once a small wyvern that was getting into the garden. \u00a0I might be able to help you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you could, I could start building on time. \u00a0I can\u2019t pay much – I\u2019m not that rich of an architect yet – but I will put your name on the building. \u00a0Do you think you can do it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTie up a wizard? \u00a0I\u2019m willing to try. \u00a0The carriage stops in Esteronzerai anyway, doesn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s where it turns off to go north,\u201d the woman nodded. \u00a0\u201cHis name is – well, the thing that he calls himself is the Diamond Raven.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026something about me and birds on this trip. \u00a0He\u2019s not an evil idol, is he?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The woman looked at Raizel a little oddly. \u201cNot that I know of. \u00a0He\u2019s a man, a wizard, as I said, of the Yederya school of magic. \u00a0He\u2019s rather skilled, but he prefers squatting and making his daily bread from begging or doing tricks, rather than doing something useful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve met the sort,\u201d Raizel agreed. \u00a0\u201cI\u2019ll do what I can. \u00a0And if I succeed, my name is Raizel ry\u2019oya <\/span>Ennizaba of Grey Mountain.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a pleasure to meet you, Raizel ry\u2019oya <\/span>Ennizaba of Grey Mountain.\u201d \u00a0The architect\u2019s bow nearly made up for the sniff of the well-dressed woman in the other seat. \u00a0\u201cAre you headed to <\/span>Buscontra<\/span> to pay your taxes, then?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the Census,\u201d Raizel agreed. \u201cMy family sent me as the oldest child free to do so. \u00a0It\u2019s been an interesting trip so far.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the sounds of things, I can\u2019t imagine it would be anything else. \u00a0A pixie?\u201d \u00a0The woman squinted. \u00a0\u201cYes, I can see it in your cheekbones. \u00a0And the touch on your forehead, that\u2019s got to be the potential goddess. \u00a0Perhaps you should pay taxes more often.\u201d \u00a0The architect\u2019s smile was playful, but there was something around the edges of it that made Raizel uncertain. \u00a0\u201cNothing like that ever happens to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think I looked like I would agree with – well, anything,\u201d Raizel sighed. \u00a0\u201cWhich is not particularly nice, but it ended up being quite interesting so far. \u00a0Now, though, I\u2019d just like to get to the capitol. \u00a0There\u2019s a lot to do back home.\u201d \u00a0And there were people waiting who might not wait all that long, especially not for a daughter of a mountain family with more children than money and no formal apprenticeship or prospects. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI can understand that. \u00a0Well, I wish I could help you more, but perhaps, if you can rope the Diamond Raven, he\u2019ll find himself willing to help. \u00a0And I – well I am Nadya po\u2019renz Ettera of Esteronzerai-and-Ettereteret. And now that we have said our hellos and made our deal – \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps we should rest,\u201d Raizel agreed. \u00a0Tie up a wizard! \u00a0The next thing she knew, she would find herself wrapping up presents and delivering them on Dark-night or blessing all the crops on Bright-day.<\/span><\/p>\n

As long as she made it to pay the taxes first. \u00a0She leaned against the window and looked out it, seeing not the passing hills and trees but her lasso. <\/span><\/p>\n

She hadn\u2019t brought her proper rope with her, but it was easy enough to imagine the motions. \u00a0There was a swirl and a drop, all in the shoulders and the wrists. \u00a0Swirl, drop. \u00a0She\u2019d used that once on one of her younger brothers and saved him from falling off a cliff. <\/span><\/p>\n

Swirl, drop, tug, circle fast, tie off. \u00a0She wondered what a wizard looked like. \u00a0She\u2019d seen a mage, once, who had wandered through their town looking for an apprentice, but mountain folk, as a whole, were not all that magical and were not all that interested in crafts like mage-hood or wizard-dom, which tended to take one far away from home. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

People back home, as a rule, did not leave home much. \u00a0And here they were, Raizel and Amos and <\/span>how many others<\/span>, trekking across the length of their country. <\/span><\/p>\n

They should have gone together. \u00a0But Amos\u2019 family couldn\u2019t spare him for long,any more than Raizel\u2019s \u00a0family could, and their friends were already on the road and probably on their way back by now. <\/span><\/p>\n

Swirl, drop, tug. \u00a0Her name would be carved on a building somewhere. \u00a0Maybe the next innkeeper to meet one of her kin going to the census wouldn\u2019t sneer <\/span>Ennizaba child<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>mountain child<\/span><\/i> with such disdain. <\/span><\/p>\n
