Purchase Negotiation 41: Orders

First: Purchased: Negotiation

Content warning in this case – discussion of consent, the lack thereof, and of rape.

Eventually, they’d gone through two movies and this moment of relaxation had to end.  Mr. MacDiarmad gently moved Leander’s legs off of him so he could stand and patted Leander on the knee.  “You two should head to bed.  Take it easy tonight, Leander – Doctor’s orders.  And in the morning we can talk about what we’re going to do about this new threat.”

Leander found himself standing up, the order moving him before he’d really managed to process it.  He offered a hand to Sylviane.  “Bed?” He tried to sound polite or suave or, well, anything, but he was pretty sure he sounded more like a caveman.

She took his hand and stood.  “That sounds good, yeah.  You need anything before we go to bed?” Continue reading

Purchase Negotiation 40: A Breather

First: Purchased: Negotiation

“We should heal you,” Mr. MacDiarmed tutted. If that was what he thought the face-in-hands meant, well, Leander wasn’t going to argue, that was for sure.  “Lay down here, your head on – mmm, on Sylviane’s lap, your legs on mine.”

Orders.  Leander could deal with that.  More than that, as he put his head very carefully on Sylviane’s lap, very carefully, he sighed in what he realized was relief.  Orders.

His legs went on Mr. MacDiarmed’s lap and he melted into the feeling of doing the right thing.  It wasn’t something he’d felt all that much with the last few owners, he had to admit, but on the other hand – on the other hand, he hadn’t had it much with Mr. MacDiarmad, either.  The man seemed to be way too reluctant to give Leander orders, other than the ones that were just the outlines to his life.

“Outlines.” Continue reading

Purchase Negotiation 39: Healing

First: Purchased: Negotiation

Trying a new title. Thoughts?

“So, of course, between Sylviane and I we can actually heal the wound, now that the authorities have been placated.”

They were sitting in the living room of Mr. MacDiarmad’s house; Leander was sandwiched between the two MacDiarmads, Sylviane pressed close to him and Mr. MacDiarmad making sure their legs were touching.

He looked between them.  “That, uh.”  He struggled with responses.  “I can take care of Sylviane better if I’m healed, yeah.”

She poked him in the arm.  “And you’ll feel better and be less prone to infection and be happier without a bullet hole in you, yeah?”

“Well… yeah, but.”  He cleared his throat. “Slave, remember?”  He looked at her with affectionate frustration, too muddled to try to make his words any more politic.  “That’s not what matters.”

“You Saved. My Life. Today.”  She poked him again.  He didn’t move away from it.  He tried not to think about the fact that they were having this argument while his owner, his master, was right on the other side of him. Continue reading

Purchase Negotiation 38 – Hospital

First: Purchased: Negotiation

Leander woke to Sylviane crying as someone did something awful to him, pressing on him, strapping him-

“And then – then they were going to kill him if I didn’t go with them,” she sobbed.  “Oh, shit, no. No, no straps, please, you’ll freak him out.  He’s got, he’s got PTSD, you can’t -“

“Miss, we have to get him into the ambulance.”

“Just the belt and, and the feet then?  I’ll help, I’ve done all the first aid classes, I’m certified.”

She was topless, smeared in his blood, wearing a little lace bra.  At least Mr. MacDiarmad hadn’t told him to keep her safe from the press.

“Jacket,” he snarled weakly at the police officer.  It took the man a moment, but before Leander’s vision went blurry again, someone had put something over Sylviane’s shoulders.

He forced himself awake until Sylviane took his hand again. “It’s okay, Leander. It’s okay.  I’m here. Dad’ll meet us at the hospital. I’m here, and they’re only doing a couple straps and I’ll make them undo them as soon as possible, okay? I’m here.”

“I’m fine,” he managed, and then he lost consciousness.

He woke to a man staring at his face, shining a light in his eyes.  “He’s going to be fine, he’s just lost a bunch of blood. You’re a hero, did you know that?” he told the man.

“Kidnappers,” he tried, but he was slurring his words something horrible.

Sylviane squeezed his hand.  “I promised him I wouldn’t leave his side,” she told the man.

“I’m afraid you can’t be in the room while we operate.”

He couldn’t see her, but he could tell from her voice that she must have lifted her chin.  “Is there a regulation to that effect and how much of the hospital do I have to buy to get it overturned?”

“Miss, it’s going to be bloody and gory, and he’ll be unconscious anyway.”

“Let me gown up and scrub in and I’ll stay out of everyone’s way and-”  She dropped her voice into something that sounded like praying, unless you knew what she was doing.

The man slapped her. “None of that.  You didn’t say it was a promise.  Come on then, gown up.”

Leander snarled.  “Slap her again and I’ll eat your hand.”

“Tell her not to use any of that shit on me and I won’t have to,” the man retorted.  “Come on, time to prep you for surgery, Mister hero.”

He hated, hated, hated going under, the feeling he couldn’t control anything.  He felt his heart rate rising; he struggled to sit up, to get out, to go anywhere else.

Sylviane squeezed his hand. “I told you,” she murmured. “I’ve got you.  I’m here. I’ve got you. I’m here. I’ve-“

He let go of consciousness more easily than he’d thought possible.

“-the sort of threat I thought of, no. But it’s an equally good threat to keep in mind.”  Mr. MacDiarmad had been talking for a while, Leander thought. He sounded tired, strained.

Shit.  He pulled himself upwards, only to be pushed downwards by a firm hand.

“Easy,”  Mr. MacDiarmad soothed.  “It’s fine. Sylviane’s fine, she’s right here.  And you’re fine, other than the new hole in you.”

Leander managed to open his eyes.  There was Sylviane, there was Mr. MacDiarmad .  “A trap,” he croaked. “I didn’t noticed it was a trap.”  He braced himself for the punishment.

“You’re not paid to notice traps, you’re paid to get her out of them safely.  And you did. You did, from what I’ve seen and been told, you did an amazing job of that.”  Mr. MacDiarmad patted Leander’s head. “And in a little while, we’re all going to go home. You did good, Leander.”

He closed his eyes as the warmth went through him.  “I nearly got her shot,” he muttered.

“No, I nearly got me shot, and I did get you shot.  Leander, stop beating yourself up,” Sylviane complained.   “You did exactly what you were supposed to do.”

“Doesn’t feel like it.”  He closed his eyes. “Feels like I fucked up.”

“Okay.”

He opened his eyes.  Sylviane was leaning over him, looking him straight in the face.  “Okay?” he croaked.

“So that’s how you feel.  After-action report, soldier.  Why does it feel that way?”

He made a noise that was half grunt and half whine.  “What?” Report, he could handle that. But she remembered the soldier thing was a story, right?  “Report? Okay. We were approached by a teenage girl in bad clothes who wanted to find, uh, Harriman.  Harriman Hall. We – you led her towards the hall, into a narrow alley between two of the classroom buildings.  Four of her companions boxed us in. They pulled guns and offered me money to leave. Obviously I didn’t take the offer, but I stalled them so that you could do a protection Working.  The stalling failed and I stopped them from attacking you.”

He watched her face.

“You kicked their asses, you mean.”

“I should’ve noticed they were following us.  I’ve gotten soft.”

She pinged his shoulder lightly with her fingers.  “Stop that. You got soft in a slave camp?” she hissed.  “You’ve totally had plenty of time to train, I’m sure,” she added in a dry drawl.  “They were stopped, I’m fine, you’re going to be fine. You not only succeed, you rocked.”

He relaxed slowly.  “I’m supposed to keep you safe,” he protested again, anyway, because it was still biting at him.

“And you kept her very safe.”  Mr. MacDiarmed patted his arm gently.  “You kept her safe. And I’m -” He cleared his throat.  “I’m very pleased with you, Leander. You did exactly what I hoped you would.”

Leander struggled against the feelings, the warmth, the pleasure.  He found his face was flushing. Damnit. He didn’t want, he didn’t-

His Master was pleased with him.  He let himself relax. The complaint would come next, the things he should have known, and he’d have his feet under him again.

“Keep up the good work.”  Mr. MacDiarmed patted him on the arm again.  “Now. They said that you could come home with us once you woke up.  It was a pretty clean wound.”

“The doctor,” he remembered.  “The one who – who slapped-“

“Not fae,” Sylviane murmured softly, “but Faded, family.  He’s good people, and he apologized for slapping me. Twice.  And once to Dad. It’s okay, Leander. We can go home. We can – we can go home.”

He huffed softly and sat up.  “Head’s – head’s funny,” he muttered.  “Can’t-“

“I’ve got the protection detail for now, Leander.  Your only responsibility for now is to take care of yourself.  Understood?”

Leander blinked blearily.  “You’re… not real,” he murmured.

“Afraid I am.  Come on, we’re going to put you in the wheelchair.  Sylviane, you’ll push him?”

“Oh, I love pushing him,” she teased, making Leander flush.  “Come on, then, right here in the chair.”

He let them coax him into the chair.  He let himself be pushed, feeling helpless, feeling useless, feeling…

Sylviane patted his shoulder.  “My hero,” she murmured, and she sounded affectionate

Feeling cared for.  He blinked a couple times and let the fog of the drugs hold him until they got to the car.

Want more?

Hey, it’s a chapter of this!  As I’ve mentioned, I have had some issues writing in the last couple months (note to self reading this in the future: The Coronavirus Crisis, Lyn.  And you were sick for all of February, too, remember?) and I’ve gone through almost all my buffer.

But one day late to post it for this week (I’m scheduling this on the 19th, Sunday), I finally finished a chapter!

Purchase Negotiation 37 – Don’t Let Her Get Hurt

Don’t let her get hurt.  That meant Leander had to get her out of the line of fire.  Five of them. One of him.

He ducked his head, took a second like he was really considering it, and pushed all the force he had into making a sort of dimple in the brick wall just big enough to hold Sylviane.

He’d been talking fast, but it was still not fast enough. One of the goons grabbed his shoulder.

He shoved backwards at the same time he grabbed the gun, twisting it away. He shoved that goon hard into the next one and kicked out towards the third.

Then it was target, hit, repeat, target, hit, repeat. The guns went away, the goons went into the wall, he kicked one and punched another and didn’t even pause before he hit the girl, grabbed one last gun before it could aim Sylviane’s way –  Continue reading

The girl in the ridiculous outfit was turning slowly around, pointing as she explained that she had tried everything.  “-but nothing seems to be Harriman Hall…?”

“Oh, sure, it’s right over here.”  Sylviane gestured behind her, directing the girl towards a little alleyway between the buildings.  The girl wasn’t getting it; she repeated Sylviane’s directions back to her, but she had them all wrong.  “Okay, why don’t we walk you there, how’s that?”

The girl shot a nervous look at Leander.  He knew that expression; he was not a small guy, and he could seem a little threatening.  He took a step back and held up his hands.

Sylviane, however, was having none of that, which was useful, he supposed, since he couldn’t really leave her and following thirty feet behind would only be creepier.  “What? He’s my boyfriend.” She took one of Leander’s hands. “He’s a sweetheart, I assure you.  Now, if you want to get to Harriman, you pretty much either need to go this way -” She started walking; Leander followed, of course.  After a moment, so did the girl.  Continue reading

In the end, they wandered aimlessly – or at her aim – around the campus for two hours while Leander learned a whole bunch of things he thought he’d never remember.  He also noticed where he’d put himself if he was a sniper, the bottlenecks where he didn’t want to get caught with her if there was a problem, the places they could take shelter and set up defenses if someone came after her.

At one point, she noticed where his gaze was.  She pointed up at the bell tower nearby. “That’s completely accessible.  You need a university pass, but that’s it. Pretty sure my father does a Forces shield around it every time he’s on campus, and he might renew it when I’m not looking.”

She twisted her face, but Leander nodded approvingly.  “It’s a good idea. It’s not just your hide he’d be protecting, either,” he added gently.  “If someone does come after you, they might not care about collateral damage.  They might want it…” He trailed off.  “Tell me about this SpringFest?”

So she did, although she kept glancing back at him, like she was considering what he’d said.   Continue reading

It might have been a dumb joke, but Inka giggled, at least.  “Oh! Well, no, girls are jerks too, I don’t think … oh, that’s cute though.”  She giggled a little more, and Leander felt less stupid. Maybe not all Sylviane’s friends would be hard to deal with.  “Oh, no, I’ve utterly lost the thread of the conversation.”

“She does that,” Ripley assured Leander.  “Not just when she’s drinking her weight in tequila, either; watch out, when these two go out drinking, it can get kinda of messy, and not just the way they shut down the boys that are interested. Although that,” he grinned, “that is a murder by burn sort of scene.  Inka burns and Sylvie freezes them out and then they swap out,  it’s amazing.”

Leander found himself smiling back.  “I can’t wait ’till I can see that.”

“Oh, and you will.  Once classes get started, it’s usually every Friday night-“ Continue reading

It was going to take a lot more than an hour to walk around campus.

It might take more than an hour to get around a single “quad,” the way Sylviane walked, which was to stop and point at something, tell him a story, and then move four feet to something else.

On the other hand, Leander really didn’t mind.  He was learning about her more than the campus, sure, but she was, in the long run, a lot more important than just a bunch of buildings.

“Oh, here.”  She flushed. He glanced at her curiously and waited. “Oh-” She noticed he was waiting. “Nothing, it’s just-“

“A bench.”  He read the inscription on the brass plaque – it wasn’t her name, wasn’t anyone whose name he recognized, and they’d been class of 1920, so probably not someone she knew personally – well, not a human she knew personally, he corrected.  Could be a fae. Could even be her mentor.

“I had my first kiss with – with someone I really liked for a while – right here on this bench.” Continue reading

“When you put it like that,” Sylviane repeated, while Leander’s mouth was full, “I really want to… I don’t know, change the world.  A lot.”

He blinked at her and wished he hadn’t filled his mouth up with sticky cheese.

“So everyone, I think… everyone ought to have good food, a warm and comfortable place to sleep, indoor plumbing, clothes that fit, comfortable shoes, and an education.  Everyone. So if there are people not getting that – which obviously there are – then I want to fix that.”

He swallowed and gulped some soda.  “Like… slave’s rights reform? Or like, uh. Um. Helping people in the inner cities, or on other continents, or -“

“All of it.  Every bit of it.  I mean, okay, that’s going to take a few years.”  She ducked her head. “But maybe there’s a way. I mean, make money, figure out how to make it into more money, and then spend a large portion of it making sure people have a place to sleep and warm shoes on their feet.  And then, on the side, working with other Shener…”

She trailed off and looked at Leander. His stomach suddenly felt leaden.

“The people who did this to you…” Continue reading
