October Giraffe Call: The Norm

The call for prompts is now OPEN!

I am now taking prompts on the themes of the Norm: finding it, subverting it, ignoring it, or whatever you want to do to it.

Leave one or many prompts, and I will write (over the next month) at least one microfic (150-500 words) to each prompter (prompts may be combined)

Prompts can be related to one of my extant settings (See my landing page-landing page) or they can be for something completely different.

Prompting is free! But Donations are always welcome.

For each $5 you donate, I will write an additional 500 words to the prompt(s) of your choice.

Donations are going to go directly towards the price of a new laptop – mine is on its last legs, and it’s my only writing machine.

If I get two new prompters or one new donator, I will write a setting piece (setting chosen by poll) explaining something about the prompts.

At $30 in donations, I will order happy-fun socks/armwarmers from Sock Dreams! Winter is coming!

At $40 in donations, everyone who donated will get an additional microfic written to their prompts. I will choose 1 non-donater at random to receive an additional microfic as well.

At $50, anyone who donated $7.50 or more will have a copy of “Alder by Post” mailed to them if they wish.

For every $50 donated, I will do a one-hour livewrite on Etherpad or googledocs during the next month.

At $80, I will write two extra 500-word continuations – chosen by prompters picked by random number generator.

At $120, everyone who donated will get an additional (3rd) microfic written to their prompts. I will choose 2 more non-donaters at random to receive an additional microfic as well.

If we get to $120, I will take suggestions for further incentives!

  1. Norm, as in the name. Usually short for Norman. In your Fae-Apoc universe, pre & post Apoc, it’s normal newly Changed fae to have a Mentor. What about the kid no-one wants to Mentor? Finding out that your aberration or weirdness, isn’t at all.

  2. * Someone in the Fae-Apoc finding a bar where everyone knows their name (With a theme of Norm how could I not reference Cheers?) * In Tir-na-Cali someone who doesn’t fit the royal norms (tall, not gray eyed, etc) discovers that despite being the last one anyone would suspect it of, they have a Gift. * Tir-na-Cali – An American and a Cali, both government officials, find themselves stranded in another country, both of them fish out of water. * What’s up with the new family in the neighborhood in the Dragons Next Door setting, the family that seems completely and utterly normal and average.

  3. Unicorn/Factory: Kinky unicorn like girls with experience instead of virgins. The other unicorns and humans think this is messed up, except for the girls in question, who like him just fine, because hey, they’re used to kinky customers. Bug Invasion: In every population, there are outliers. What is a not-normal bug like? And would that one get along better or worse with humans than the other bugs do? Elastic rebound — the harder someone tries to be normal, the farther from it they get. I have boosted the signal on DW, LJ, and FB.

  4. In Addergoogle Y9, someone has a hobby everyone else thinks is a little strange, even for here In Unicorn Factory, has anyone just ever been not interested? Period?

  5. Addergoole: usually after you catch someone, they’re Kept for a while. Someone letting their Kept go after only a few weeks.

  6. Nrk, the Dragons Next Door landing page is out of date. I believe one of the active threads with Junie saw her being pursued by a number of dubious characters, some of whom she was more aware of than others, and defended by the neighborhood watch (including the gremlins in her backpack). The folks after her … which of them are ‘normal humans’, or think they are? What are the ones who aren’t? And what do any of them think they’re going to do with her if the catch her? In the Stranded ‘verse — one or more of the seasonal siblings winds up working with or for someone totally mundane. Why? How does that go? Can they explain what they’re doing in any useful way? Aunts! Robbie and others have suggested that the family has a bit of a reputation. What does the family look like to outsiders? What gets said, what do they ignore, what (if anything), do they feel a need to set straight, or squelch? How do they interact with other unusual people or families? Ruan and Johias went actively looking for others, to deal with Tansy’s spirit traps … Was Genique “normal” before she was abducted by space pirates? In The Beggars, we — and Cary — have just found out that Andy isn’t “too normal” (or perhaps, is sufficiently close to local “normal”). What next? Where does that walk go? Who do they meet? Rin’s still stuck with not being “just a normal healer”, post-war, while she figures out what to do with Girey, and finds out what’s been going on politically while she’s in the field …

  7. Oh, heck, it’s been a while since I’ve begged for one. Addergoolie: New student who not only doesn’t mind being Kept, they’re actually seeking out/enjoy being ordered around by a Keeper. Addergoolie? (or whatever setting it was) digging back to the “What do you mean ‘what key’?” stories. Our hero finds himself becoming accustomed to his situation.
