Tuesday, with Where’s the Writing?

I just realized I have not posted fiction here since September 18th. O_O

And it’s not that I haven’t been writing. I had a little meltdown in there for a couple days (these things happen) but for the most part – writing has been happening.

But I’ve been working on longer things (oooh, aah), Addergoole and long stories and random other things. My @thorneWrites twitter is often a good indication of what I’m working on at any given moment.

Here’s a few snippets from yesterday’s writing

“It’s all right. He wasn’t pleasant, but he only broke two ribs.” She hugged him close to her, wondering, once again, what she was going to do with him. “I’ve survived worse.”

~*#*~

“I never should have gotten you him!”

“Maybe not. Maybe I should have gotten him for myself. But he’s mine, now, and I want to spend some time alone with him.” She stepped over her threshold, pushing Noam further into her room. “I like you, Hera, but that doesn’t mean I need to spend every moment with you.”

~*#*~

Would she leave him that? Would he be alive long enough to care?

“The…” He couldn’t bring himself to admit what he was. A normal human would not have been able to sense the magic. “I’ve heard of places like that.”

“Everyone has. That’s part of the strength, of course. Nobody touches a Dark Tower.”

~*#*~

“Some people get off more easily than others.” Aly sat down next to the little girl with a tray full of snack foods. How she’d manage to get that together without leaving the room, Baram didn’t know. He assumed magic. “And some people just slide around the bad stuff.”

“Oh, I had a bad Keeper. It’s just that Callista’s Keeper was… something else.”

~*#*~

“That’s fucked up. Your whole country is fucked up. This whole situation is fucked up.” Her voice was rising, but Elisabeth didn’t care. It was just ridiculous. Some people got to fall into rabbit holes. She’d fallen into All Slaves All the Time. “And you’re fucked up if you think I’m going to just kowtow for you, just because you paid my kidnapper for the privilege of carrying me out of there.”

Hey, look, a boundary, eep edition

I’m going to put this behind a cut because it’s coming off a bit cranky. Read at your own risk.

I don’t do well with setting boundaries; I don’t do well with enforcing them.

I do really well with learning other people’s and trying to respect that (Wyst says I am too good at trying to respect other people’s boundaries, actually), and I tend to expect other people will do the same for me, which would be a lot more reasonable if I was more clear on those boundaries, yes.

But I’m beginning to at least learn where they are. Generally by realizing when I’m really, really angry and stopping to take a look.

Here’s some new ones.

This one’s a deal-breaker, too:

  • Do not presume that my mental health should occur on your agenda.
To start with, assuming that I’m not working on something because you don’t see change is pretty arrogant. To continue – I work on fixing things based on my mental comfort, my life, my marriage, my friendships, and my job, in about that order. So, you know, I might have something taking my energy that isn’t the brainweasel you think I ought to evict today.

(Side note: Please see other boundaries, especially the one regarding “should,” this one)

  • Please don’t tell me how I should be feeling. It’s silencing (I learned this phrase recently, and it startles me how much it fits.) It’s just… just don’t do it, okay?
  • This one isn’t a boundary as much as it’s a tip: If you want to know how I’m feeling (emotions), ask. I won’t lie to you if asked directly.

It feels like there ought to be more, but that’s what I’ve got so far today

Lyn Action Ficure, complete with chainsaw, axe, and canning jars

It’s been a busy time around Casa Thorne.

It’s autumn, which means that the tomatoes, cukes, and everything else are all coming ripe, so it’s canning time (Apples will be another month, and we won’t have many at all this time, due to the wonky March-April).

In addition, we just got 2.5 cord of wood delivered, so there’s hauling and stacking to be done.

And I’m working on prettifying the foyer, which, like everything else around here, means making it uglier first!

In addition, I started a new serial…

Lasers & Field Trip

Yesterday, I took a half-day or work and drove with T. up to Syracuse (hour-and-a-half-drive) to get zapped with lasers.

I am really really liking the results of laser hair removal. I’ve struggled with excess hair since puberty, and I love having parts smooth and worry-free. Also? Groupon makes it actually affordable

THEN we hit two Army-Navy surplus stores, bought a $27 wool blanket (We shall see) and some nifty stuff, including a new purse for me, hit our favorite bulk food store, a farm stand, and went out for Indian at a new place in College Town (yes, Ithaca has a section called College Town.)

Then we played Carcasone and hung out with the cats.

Awesome day. We should have more of those.

Weekend, and a writing lull

Last week was immensely busy for me at Day Job, and then I topped it off by taking a 4-day weekend, 2 days of which involved company, and the other two of which involved recuperating.

Thus, my writing has been very slow for a week or two, and I’m just now getting my brain back into Writing Mode.

I’m still here, though.

How’s everyone else?

First, invent the Rabbit… Saag Paneer from scratch

I recently saw this quote http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7s664NsLeFM on a bumper sticker: Carl Sagan: “If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.”

It reminded me of the apocryphal recipe for rabbit stew that starts “first, catch the rabbit.” (link)

By Sagan’s standards, we did not make Saag Paneer from scratch. However, the paneer (cheese) was made from milk, buttermilk, and salt at home, and half the spinach and all the onions were grown in our own garden, so it does meet at least some standards for such (I wonder if one can can saag. I think you should be able to, with a pressure cooker)

It was, by the by, delicious. I’m going to to make more paneer soon. Assuming I still hae more cheesecloth.
