Oh, no, not the briar patch…

The poll has spoken, and the theme for September will be CATS!

September Theme Poll!

It’s time to pick the September Theme!

From this theme, I will run the Patreon $5+ Patrons Prompt Call.

From that call, I will write at least two short stories (one free for everyone) and one story.

Anyone can vote in this poll; if you don’t have a DW account, just vote in the comments.

Want to see what’s come out of the polls in the past? Check out my Patreon; you can see the free stories without pledging, or pledge $1/month to read all the stories!

I will close this poll on Wednesday, September 2, around 7 p.m. Eastern Time.

Posted on Patreon for Patrons-only, a story of the Faerie Apocalypse:

Field Trip

“The Invader threat meter said it was all clear.” Mr. Hopkins leaned his head back on the broken concrete. “They said it was safe. I’m so sorry. I’m so—”

His head lolled to one side…

“A Storm over Addergoole East” posted on Patreon

Posted on Patreon for Patrons-only, a story of Kailani, Regine, and Addergoole East:

A Storm Over Addergoole East

August 2008
The school looked very much the same. That was, Kailani supposed, reasonable. It had not changed in the three years she’d been there; only her viewpoint had.

The halls were empty. There would be nobody here except teachers she recognized anyway, but she still found herself looking in the corners and niches, peeking into the classrooms. That’s where Rozen had grabbed her. That’s where she’d first met Taro. There was the dining hall, where she’d first found out she was in a school of faeries.

This was Director Regine’s office…

Chase the Fox Part II

Written to @DaHob’s commissioned continuation; part II of a longer story.  This comes after Fox Hunt(Saturday) and The Hunt Continues (Wednesday) and Chase the Fox Part I (Wednesday – the following Saturday).

🦊

Wednesday

Hitchhiking had gotten old pretty quickly. George hadn’t thumbed a ride in years, not since his college days, and he found that all the things that had made it so unpleasant back in Maine were almost identical in California — the road splashing and the traffic noise, the hours you’d go by with nobody picking you up, the odd juts out of your way when you did get a ride, the talking. The endless uncomfortable chatter.

Add to it that in California, the chatter was likely to veer into topics he knew nothing about. Politics was a land mine. Even the weather could be tricky. And then there was his accent, which didn’t exactly sound Down Home Californian not matter how much time he’d spent scrubbing the salt water and lobster out of his vowels. Every ride was an exercise in tension, and the time spent watching for rides wasn’t much better.

After his third ride spent far too long asking prying questions about his marriage plans and potential children, George decided walking was the better plan. He could stay away from the road, he wouldn’t have to deal with prying questions, and he wouldn’t have to worry about the police having his picture, for any number of reasons including $517 Californian he’d stolen over the past few days. Angelic Visitation

This comes after The Storm Prince of Death and @inspectrCaracal’s response here. It is set in the Fae Apoc, at least 60 years after the 2011 apocalypse.  Yoshi is the son of Cynara, often mentioned.

Yoshi loved his parents, he really did, but sometimes he just needed to get out into the world and get away from them. The same was true of Dáirine, with whom he had a strange sort of on-again, on-again relationship that neither of them quite understood.

To get away, he’d taken to wandering the world — a family trait, it seemed. There was a lot of world out there to see; Yoshi had a feeling that he could travel for a century and not see half of it. But he made a point of checking in every year or so. There was nothing more embarrassing than having your mother appear out of nowhere because you hadn’t remembered to visit.

It was on the way back “home” — to Cloverleaf, which had never been home but was the place his family lived — that Yoshi encountered the little village. It was friendly to a passing stranger, something not all towns would do in this rough age, but their friendliness had a cautious edge to it. Continue reading
