August (Worldbuilding) Challenge Day One: Measurements

It went like this: SeaLemon has this August Doodle Challenge (Tumblr), and it looked interesting, but in that “neat-but-not-quite” sort of way.

I mentioned I wanted to do a Worldbuilding challenge based on the doodle challenge. [personal profile] inventrix offered to make me a modified list.

Day 1 is Measurements. This is a wearable measurement tool from Reiassan, showing several sizes of cord gauge (alphabetical from K to N), a small ruler measuring up to 3 Demai, or a Taiden, a “knot.” A taiden is 1/10 of a gorzhee, a “reach.”

(Day 2 is Climate)

Who’s Next Door? Help requested

For Five-minute Map Friday tomorrow, I’m thinking of doing a quick map of Aud & Sage’s part of Smokey Knoll

I KNOW I’ve identified harpies and pixies and centaurs nearby, but I can’t FIND them.

What I have so far is:

the Brownies across the street.
Ogres (dragons) next door – cavern-and-castle system – waterfall

The neighborhood around it [Smokey Knoll], the Retibya Heights, is a, ah…”
“It’s an affluent upper-class human neighborhood…”

the Brownies across the street….

“(The harpies)…Their great-grandchildren live down the block from me”

Rin & Girey’s Campsite, Updated

The Cartographers’ Guild does a monthly Lite Mapping Challenge, so I took my Five-Minute Map sketch and … made it better.

Not perfect, but better.

And then I had a small panic attack, and then I submitted it.

It’s one of Rin & Girey’s campsites, early in the story.

Friday’s Five-Minute Map (give or take): Edally Academy

This is a rough top-down view of Edally Academy, done by tracing dimes (see this tweet) because I don’t keep a compass at work.

I’m really enjoying #FridayFiveMinuteMap, and I encourage everyone to join in!

#Fridayfiveminutemap – Same world, different era!

Folchir's Fort.jpg

While I was looking up maps, I encountered the premise of “friday 5-minute maps.” And, while nobody had been active on any of the tags in a while, I thought it looked fun.

So here’s my first idea: Folchir’s Fort.

This stands (loosely) where on my big map project there is a red star – ‘cept it’s been long enough (approx 1500-2000 years ago) that the river has moved. The bigger houses are meant to be almost longhouse style: communal big buildings thrown up quickly, because shelter was needed.

(I gotta say, some of the maps in the Google Plus community are amazing for 5 minutes!)

Now taking suggestions for the next few fridays worth of maps.

Rivers and Lakes were made, but…

…no pictures today because I made a muck up of trying to make the long rivers more curvy. <.<

Tomorrow I will trace the map and start clean with shiny new curvy rivers.

And some lakes, preferably ones that don’t look like a troll-head. Those old troll dolls with all the hair.

I keep forgetting you don’t need visible obvious rivers feeding into a lake (visible on a continent-scale map, that is). It could all be streams.

Pictures tomorrow!

(pre-curvied drawings can be shown here – https://twitter.com/lynthornealder/status/722939920877273088 – that at least decide placement of the rivers in broad scale)

Edit (again): Please ignore the awful scribbles that are the rivers. This is for basic city and border placement.

Red is our story country, at least the beginning of it. Blue is Second Country and spills onto the large island below and 1/5 of the small islands. Third country is the other small islands and the last 2 largish islands. (Islands not visible on this map)

Adding mountains to a fantasy map… with split peas~

After the lentil map yesterday, I wanted to add mountains next.

So back to the pantry!

Peas! I played with a few different ranges before deciding that before a water-raising event some 1000 years ago, much of this island chain was one continent. So many of the peaks (on the left of the map) are the remains of a single mountain range.

And here’s the map with the mountain ranges roughed in. Frankly, I think they show up better as peas <.<

Next, according to every “draw your fantasy map” thing I’ve found, is supposed to be rivers. But I am sort of wanting to know what the rest of the elevation is doing!

Like, are there gorges? (I live in NYS, we have a lot of gorges). Is there a broad bread-basket plain there along the bottom of the main continent? I originally imagined a N-S cross-continental river; where would that go?

Also, considering the scale, are my mountains too wide? I should look into mountains a bit more.

(ETA: from wikipedia: “The Rockies vary in width from 70 to 300 miles” Mine edge out about 200 miles wide, so I’m okay!)

(ETA: BIOMES I need to figure out BIOMES. Well, “need to.”)

So many things to think about!

Advice?

Making a fantasy map with lentils~

First things first: hattip [personal profile] becka_sutton, for showing me this video.

This is my attempt at creating Yet Another Fantasy World via the “pile of stuff on the paper” method.

Images moved here.

First attempt: sort of a shark under the US. Not quite the look I wanted.

Second attempt: much closer.

Close-up of the lower islands.

And here’s the draft map!

Next up: Mountains

Edited to add: dimensions

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

And Atlantis:

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

(this is for the setting I’ve been working on for a story whose working title is Portal Bound)

P.S. North is to the right on all these. Not sure why the images insist on being rotated.

Name the Serial Family! (also maybe the Serial)

Okay, I have a Serial family.

But they need names! Also, I need a POV character of them, pref. one of the kids. I’m thinking Middle Daughter – thoughts?

We have their brief bios (see link above) and know that they live on a tropical sky island and like to hike.

Also, they’re about to go on an adventure.

Name them?

We have Parent One, Parent Two, and Daughters One through Three.

While we’re at it, the setting/serial need names too!

From Rix_scaedu:

Ideas for names – won’t work together:

Rainmouse
Isa
Shining Pearl

From inventrix:
Nimbus

From: clare_dragonfly:
Billow (to go with Nimbus and Shining Pearl)
