Hottest Days of summer pic for the nastiest days of winter

Sam’s Point Nature Preserve, near Ellentown NY; that’s me & our friends abjuk & E.Mc in the photo, taken by T. (the Sam of the Point was an ancestor of Abjuk’s)

This was one of the hottest days I can remember this past summer; we (Abjuk, E.Mc, T., and I) did a craft fest in Rhinbeck and then hiked this – the ice caves were absolutely wonderful after the heat.

Pics from the Fall in hopes of the spring

Photo by my husband, T., taken several months ago in a hike at Finger Lakes National Forest.

The pond was sproinging with these little things; we’d walk a foot and another would hop into the lake with a noise like a rubber-band banjo. T. managed to catch a picture of one.

Nice park. We will go there again when the road clears.

New Routine, and things

My morning now has a new routine: get up, feed cat wet food, shower, put in contacts, take meds, inject cat with insulin, praise cat and tell him he’s a good boy, get dressed, find car, brush it off, go to work.

My kitty Drake http://twitpic.com/1l2n6u is a good kitty. We’ve had him since he was a kitten, something like 10 or 11 years ago, and I love him dearly. We lost his foster-brother Gatsby http://twitpic.com/ks6hh this summer, so when Drake started getting sick, I sort of flipped out a bit. We caught it early enough that it’s completely treatable, but it’s going to be expensive.

I’m pondering doing a live-write-athon to raise money to cover vet fees, but that’s about all I know so far about that one: something like $5 buys you 500 words on any topic. That’s… 30,000 words, I think, to cover the vet bills & insulin.

I think I need to get my personal author page re-set-up first, though.

Okay, enough blather. The world can normalize for a few days please?

*Facepalm*

Thank you, cluudle. Duh.

Gender. Where did I get this messed-up obsession with gender roles, with a side order of gender confusion?

My family has very strong gender roles
and I fit the masculine of those more than the feminine.(*)

duh

Add on to that a decade spent with gamers for whom “girl” is an alien species so “not-girl” is how they deal with girls they can talk to…

…and playing with the boys is more fun (hiking!) than playing with the girls (shopping? Makeup?)…

(*) And not the ones you see on TV shows. Women handle finance. We’re a very Strong Female Role Model family. But men handle woodworking, cars, metalworking (Sort of. My mom sanded and stained our entire house. Twice).

I have trouble being coherent about this, but there’s some blather.

Weekend Glory and La-De-Da

When I was working at the department store Bon*Ton in the housewares department, I had a co-worker who was concerned about the health risks in… pretty much everything we sold, but for this story, specifically the pans, non-stick, this, that…

So I asked her, well, why not All-Clad?

They’re a bit expensive, aren’t they?

Well, we just buy them scratch-and-dent, and we love the way they work.

And she said, I shit you not, “Well, La-dee-dah, you and your All-Clad.”

This has become an in-joke for us, now, one of the few in our house that doesn’t involve the Simpsons (“that video game with the great digital eyelash rendering,” for example).

So, this weekend, in the middle of a very wonderful trip with E.Mc and Kris, in which we did Christmas (it’s still January, that’s not late), they gifted us (Husband-person, really) with an All-Clad saucepan. La-dee-dah, us and our great weekend!

I love my friends. It’s good to be me.
