A slightly different sort of prompt request – brainstorming for a submission

I want to write a story for submission based on the theme of identity (I’m working my way through the themes in this textbook, and I’m having trouble coming u with ideas.

Like, staring-at-the-chalkboard nothing’s-coming sort of having trouble.

So, this one-shot call is more like Ysabet’s fishbowls: if I write something based off your prompt, I will send it to you privately before I submit it. I will post one not-going-to-submit idea for free, and then if I’ve managed to get more than two flash fictions out of it, I’ll offer up story-sponsorship options.

But the main point here is to get me something to submit. So: ideas on identity?

Escape From Rochester (Camp Nano July’14 project) Character Profile 14

This is the 14th in a series of character profiles for my upcoming July Camp Nano project – Escape from Rochester.

Thirty-two students & their friends need to get out of Rochester before the gods’-war destroys everything. How will they make it out – and how many of them will survive?

Landing page here.

Cadens Montgomery – New Media Interactive Development

Cadens has felt the presence of the strange and the weird in her life since childhood – she has heard voices where there were no voices to be heard, she has known things she had no right to know, and she has understood things that were beyond her.

Her mother took her to church because she wanted to be sure Cadens had a strong moral background – although both Cadens and her mother had always known that something was a little weird about Cadens’ father, it was an open secret, the sort never mentioned at the dinner table.

Cadens held on to that faith, and the moral backing it gave her, after puberty showed that she was a little bit weirder than most, after her powers developed in full. She kept her faith when she went to college, and when a relationship with Brendan went very quickly south.

She is a slender girl of medium – 5’5″ – height, with long red hair that she wears loose most of the time. Her eyes are black and, in the right light, appear iridescent, like a beetle’s wings. She wears her fingernails painted to hide the fact that they’re chitinous.

She wants to be a news reporter, but is interested in the way the internet and social media are being used to move news and information. She prefers – unsurprisingly – sound-transmission media and has her own youtube channel.

She dated Lewis‘ roommate Rob for a while, but found they were too far apart in core beliefs; right now she is finding herself single and not sure if she wants to be or not…. but has enough things on her plate that it’s a distant fourth in terms of priorities.

Of course, then the world ends…

The Collar Job, Part XVI

This is an ongoing Tír na Cali/Leverage fanfiction crossover.

Table of Contents here

Fade in from commercial to see Ana and Eliot facing the rest of the team and one small Californian Lord.

“Lord Lorcan.” Ana’s eyes trail over the rest of the team. “I see you brought… friends.” Behind her, Eliot sighs. He shifts his weight, just a bit; Parker’s eyes shoot to him. The rest of the team does a better job of staying nonchalant, but Parker’s eyes are on the collar.

It’s only a moment before Hardison’s eyes follow hers, and it’s Sophie and Nate looking at Ana, and with effort, at that.

Lord Lorcan clears his throat, which doesn’t really help matters. Ana’s eyes don’t move off of him, although her stance is every bit as combat-ready as Eliot’s. Sohpie visibly jumps; Nate’s twitch is a little less obvious.

“He’s wearing a collar.” Parker’s whisper really isn’t a whisper.

“Company,” Lorcan agrees, talking rather hurriedly over Parker. “Yes. This is Charlotte Prentiss, Duchess of Hanover. The others are her entourage; she’s in the country visiting and thought she’d like to meet some of my friends.”

“And you brought her here?” Ana makes an expression which bears some resemblance to a smile, although her bow is entirely genuine. “Duchess. It is a pleasure to meet you, your ladyship. I do hope Lorcan’s only said good things about me.”

“I wouldn’t dare do anything but, you know that.” The little lordling is beginning to babble.

Sophie/Charlotte simply smiles, and returns Ana’s bow with a little head-nod of her own. “Your Ladyship, I’ve heard lovely things about you.” Her accent is thick, almost – almost – over the top. “And Lord Lorcan did say you were a lovely young woman.”

“I’m sure he did.” Ana’s eyes rake over the group. “Was that before or after he offered to help you steal back your friend? Lorcan, you’ve always been a lousy liar and your tells are far too obvious.”

“Oh, fuck this, man.” Hardison brings out a pistol from his computer bag. Everything seems to explode at once.

“Hardison, no!”

Alec levels the gun at Ana; her eyes narrow. Eliot’s shout comes out far too slowly.

Ana moves.

Recipe Log: Chocolate Avocado Pudding

So, we made – http://www.twopeasandtheirpod.com/dark-chocolate-pudding/ – this recipe, although i pulled generously from other recipes and my own experience

Their recipe first, my notes second:
1 cup unsweetened almond milk – 1/2 c whole milk
2 ripe avocados, peeled and pitted – 2-1/3 avocados
1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder – 1/3 dutched chocolate, 2 T dark Hershey
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup – 1/2 scant maple syrup, ~1T Brown sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract – 3-4 teas vanilla
1/4 teaspoon almond extract (I didn’t add this) – (me neither)
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon – 1 teas
Pinch of sea salt – large pinch
Raspberries, for garnish – (nope)
– 1/2 teas espresso powder

It was delicious. It didn’t taste like avocado, and it had a texture similar to almost-set pudding, but it had a very nice rich chocolate flavor and a lot of good cinnamon nose to it.

Will do again.

Escape From Rochester (Camp Nano July’14 project) Prequel Vignette: Jordan

Fourth in a series of stories leading up to my Camp Nano Project – this one stars Jordan.

For information on the events they’re discussing, see [tumblr.com profile] faeapoclive and [twitter.com profile] faeapoclive
“So, what do you think of all this?”

It was June, and it was New York, so it was raining, which meant we’d all ended up at my place instead of out in the swamp. Some things I could work around. Thunderstorms, not so much.

And Jordan was leaning over the back of the coveted Green Armchair to talk under the general drunken revelry of the conversation, to ask me –

“All this?” It was pretty dumb to play dumb, but I admit, I tried anyway. “It’s a party. Pretty fun, as parties go.”

She gave me that Look that said don’t even try with me. “The stuff on tv. ‘Portals.’ People vanishing. All of that mess. What do you think of it? It’s too extensive to be a hoax… isn’t it?”

It sounded as if she wanted to be reassured. I didn’t have all that much reassurance to give, but I tried. “Well, considering everything’s coming from a few sources – mostly the AP, right? – then it could be a hoax. You’d need good photoshop skills or a back lot in Hollywood…”

“Okay, now you sound like a moon landing denier.” Jordan huffed.

“They’re crazy – but their points are accurate. And this is a lot more out there than a moon landing. Big rings of fire, people going missing – did you hear the one about the woman being cured of cancer by the portal? It’s pretty out there.”

Jordan pursed her lips. “People go missing all the time.” I got the feeling I didn’t want to ask her how she knew that. “But these rings of flame -“

“I like the theory where it’s pollution.” I liked the theory, although I wasn’t sure I believed it.

“Pollution.” Finally, she accepted something I’d handed her. “Okay. Pollution.”
