The Bellamy, Chapter 20

šŸ“š

They sat there, gazes locked, the trainee archivist and the – well, and the woman with horns who had been here quite a while, as awkward a descriptor as that was.

The moment held for a heartbeat, another, another.Ā  Then Amanana chuckled and the mood broke, and Veronika allowed herself to look away.

“I believe – I believe of everyone who has come through here, perhaps you do actually see.Ā  Very good.”Ā  Amanana took an item from the case behind her, wrapped it up in a handkerchief, and slipped the package in a little box. She signed the outside of the box with her loopy signature.Ā  “There.Ā  That’s your item from here handled, and now let’s get you to the skeleton room.Ā  I do believe that one is required on the first day.Ā  Even coming from the Fillion as you do, they like to know that new people can handle the basics, like skeletons.”

At this point, Veronika couldn’t do anything but laugh a little helplessly. “The basics, yes.”Ā  She considered matters. “Yes, those really would be some of the basics, wouldn’t they? Archaeology, paleontology – and those are only the ones that obviously hinge on skeletons, much less – oh dear.”Ā  She put a hand to her mouth.Ā  “I have really got to consider my habit of speaking before I think a little bit more, before it gets me in trouble.” Continue reading

Landing Page: The Bellamy

The Bellamy Manor Archival Library and Museum is one of the foremost in the nation, nay, in the world.Ā  Its collections host an amazing depth and breadth of information, of historical artifacts, of documentation of life in thousands of different sorts.Ā

It also is rumored to be haunted – as all good archives are – to hold secrets – again, as all must – and to hide many more rooms in its historical halls than its exterior would suggest.Ā  It’s rumored to have anything you might want, if only you know what to look for.

Darker rumors suggest that it eats new hires.

The Story

Veronika Bellamy (possibly no relation, possibly some) has been working for years to get to the Bellamy, and now she has her chance.Ā  If she can make it through her first day, if she doesn’t spook or run away in anger or possibly just… vanish…., she will be in her dream job.

But first, she needs to get through that first day.

Breaking Out

breaking out

This is a follow up to A Break?Ā  from my Fishy Prompt Call here – anyone can prompt (if you haven’t already) and please do!

Science! is a longstanding setting of mad science; Jess, below, is fromĀ Quick Thinking, (and, of course, A Break?). Cara is from almost all the Science stories except that oneā€¦ But her first appearance was here.Ā  The two interns were unnamed in A Break? but this is the same vacation and same interns.

šŸŸ

“You know these woods really well.”Ā  The shorter intern – Callum O’Neill – had been following Jess around since she had wandered down from the cabin loft bedroom sometime past sunrise but before noon. The other one – Lilian Win – had stayed back on the porch overlooking the gorge, taking photo after photo on her phone.Ā  She seemed to have calmed down, however, so Jess wasn’t going to complain.Ā  Continue reading

The Great August Rebloggening Challenge: Week 5 Check In

Home Site housekeeping Challenge

Hello Again! It’s time to check in on the Home Site Housekeeping Challenge!

And last week (Despite a blood test, a drive for a blood test that didn’t happen, an xray, an EKG, and … probably something else?) was pretty decent for me in the Home Site House-Keeping field!

So let’s see. I’m still in the process of putting up a new wiki, because nothing is ever easy, /woe, but I got several posts up on Patreon and on my blog here (even if three of the Patreon posts were the same Map of Cya’s Campground). Continue reading

Cleaning Up

Cleaning Up

This is a follow up to Clean…? from my Fishy Prompt Call here – anyone can prompt (if you haven’t already) and please do!

This story is set in the same world & city as Saving the Cult (If Not the World). It’s even talking about the same power plant as in Saving the Cult. Warning: This one is a bit spoilery to things not yet revealed in Saving the Cult.Ā

Robotic

This is set in (one of ) the world(s) of the Hidden Mall – Abby and Liv have been travelling through a series of multiverse malls, many of them abandoned. Actually, many Abby-and-Livs, Sandy-and-Vics have been travelling – this is a different Abby & Liv than those in the main story. This is a direct sequel to Fountain Fishing.

šŸŸ

“Are you sure?”Ā  Liv huffed quietly.Ā  She was already packing up their gear. “No, I know you’re sure.Ā  But this place – nothing is trying to kill us, nothing is trying to-” she stopped and twitched.

Abby paused long enough to hug her friend.Ā  “The last place was bad, I know,” she murmured.Ā Ā

“And the place before that.”Ā  Liv’s voice was muffled by Abby’s shoulder, buit Abby knew what she was saying anyway.Ā  “And the one two before that… I wish we knew how to go back to a place.Ā  That one three ago, that was pretty nice.”

Abby ran through the malls in her mind.Ā  Last had been the one that had clearly turned into the lair of a serial killer – this one not the sort that only killed Abbies, at least, except that meant the asshole had targeted Liv.Ā  Before that had been the place on fire.Ā  Before that had been…

“Liv.Ā  Olivia.Ā  That place wanted to put us each in a little pod and keep us there.” Continue reading

Federated Worlds – Worldbuilding for Border Banner

Written in February 2020, posted at https://ping.the-planet.space/notes/846zh97210 (and other posts), but I cannot find it posted here, so here it is!

Malina’s Border Banners World – Worldbuilding.

šŸš©

Greetings, I’m Lyn, and I thought up #FediWorlds.Ā

And that being said, I’m not even sure how to answer this question.Ā

I did a poll as to what world I’d work on, and “Story for B” won.Ā  This story, appropriately begun on this account, involves a princess of a very long name becoming lost in the desert.Ā

I think Rick and Evie from The Mummy (1990s) – early in the movie when they spend a lot of the time arguing – fit my feel for this story so far.Ā

This may be influenced by the fact that they are wandering through the desert, of course, or that the cat, one of the main characters, is obstinate and difficult.Ā  Continue reading

Border Banners

Malina’s people live in a comfortable kingdom that has not seen real war in generations.Ā  They have a thriving craft-person economy, they have a comfortable relationship with the one nation they share a border with, and they have a very nice monarchy – although, as the monarchs are Malina’s parents, she may be biased.

Their other border is a desert that nobody really thinks about, nobody really… even considers…

Until Malina is too bored at a party and goes walking.. into the desert.

The Fishy Call – a Follow Up!

    Hello my friends!

I am about to start working on the third story with enough comments – Fountain Fishing– but there are a few that needĀ one more comment. (edited to add:I was wrong! Clean also has five comments.Ā  But still all the below will stand)

And, okay, I’m gonna be honest. It’s been a kinda bad few weeks for me. I couldĀ use lots of comments.Ā  Well, as long as they’re not super negative, or super confusing :-/

So!Ā  If you want me to write more of these fish stories, and you want to perk me up, the first one of these to get to five comments will get a story!Ā  And then after that, the first to get to seven and the first to get to nine (although in the first round, we did it backwards, got a nine, then a 7, then a 5…)

Unplumbed DepthsĀ ā€“Ā Fishing in Minecraft can get you some strange results.Ā  This fictional view of the fishing strips out a lot of the blockier elements butĀ doesĀ leave a fishing pole with, perhaps, a little too much Luck enchanted into it.
    5ļøāƒ£ comments!

ā€¦A Breakā€¦?Ā ā€“ Jess works security at The Facility, a place where science which nobody calls mad (in the hearing of the scientists) is perpetrated.Ā  Itā€™s a really good job.Ā  But sometimes, your friend up in the top end of things asks for a favorā€¦
    7ļøāƒ£ comments!

The Night FishersĀ ā€“ they only fished at day.Ā  Murph was about to find out why.
    4ļøāƒ£ comments

Bonus round!Ā  Want to leave a lot of comments, or get in a whole bunch of people to comment (eeee, make myĀ week!), get this one up to 5+ comments.

Seek Andā€¦?Ā  Long long ago, I began a story about a woman lost in a blizzard and ending up in a different world. This story peeks in on her life, as she fishes for answers and is caught in turn.
    2ļøāƒ£ comments

Sorry, but only comments in the blog count – it’s too hard to track down mastodon/twitter/tumblr/discord comments and keep count.
